Overview

The Brown Bag Lunch Group (BBL) has achieved a significant milestone, celebrating five years as a dynamic network of independent experts, entrepreneurs, and academics in geopolitics, digital policy, regulatory affairs, IT, health, telecommunications, and cybersecurity. Our recent anniversary gathering in Porto provided an opportunity to reflect on our journey and establish ambitious goals for the future.

During the Corona lockdowns, Georg Serentschy initiated the Brown Bag Lunch Group to foster exchange and discussion among experts, acting as a vital impulse giver. The group, thriving on its flat hierarchy, has grown into a vibrant platform for interdisciplinary dialogue. Georg at the core tends to the group’s growth and is a catalyst to shaping its topics and evolution. The BBL-group continues to thrive as a trusted space for exploring complex global issues.

The group acknowledged successful outcomes, including the transition of a Corona-triggered initiative into a sustainable operation with tangible results post-pandemic. A key feature of BBL is that the group operates without written rules or strict formalities. Identified strengths included an interdisciplinary approach, creative problem-solving abilities, and the group's openness to exploring complex issues.

Discussion panel

Suggestions for the future include maintaining high standards and a safe-space environment, organizing webinars and possibly conferences, and increasing outreach and visibility through platforms such as LinkedIn and the BBL website. A proposal was made to adopt quarterly thematic focuses and webinars (eventually also conferences) to enhance engagement and ensure timeliness.

Participants reflected positively on the past five years of BBL meetings, highlighting their role in enhancing social cohesion and providing a trusted environment for discussing sensitive and critical topics. Members appreciated the high standards maintained during discussions, noting a timely shift from technology-focused subjects to a broader emphasis on geopolitics and interdisciplinary matters.

Group Size and Membership

Discussion led to consensus, indicating that maintaining a manageable number of approximately 15 to 17 members under the current modus operandi, without written rules and strict formalities, is essential for preserving group dynamics and operational effectiveness. A "Friends of BBL" group was proposed to accommodate interest beyond the current membership limits, allowing broader participation from a wider circle of interested individuals without diluting the core group’s effectiveness.

Although the current group composition is well-diversified across several dimensions, greater diversity will eventually be needed, particularly from creative, defense and financial industries. The lack of representation from the Americas and Asia has been acknowledged as a shortcoming in addressing global issues. However, this also presents practical challenges, such as managing time zones and coping with travel complications.

Reflecting on Our Discussions

Over the past five years, BBL has facilitated discussions on pivotal topics shaping the digital landscape and adjacent fields. Our discussions have frequently been ahead of the curve in identifying and addressing emerging issues that evolved into significant societal challenges. Our weekly online meetings and sessions, regularly featuring external speakers, have encompassed a broad spectrum of subjects. Here are a few illustrative examples; more can be found on our website:

  • AI troubles – From ethics to hypes to democratic shifts: AI as a social and political narrative rather than just a technology.
  • Trump and Other Meme Coins, a Cultural and Speculative Phenomenon.
  • Artificial Intelligence in Legal Practice: Exploring practical applications and implications of AI in the legal sector.
  • Quantum Computing in Medical Imaging: Assessing the potential of quantum technologies to revolutionize cancer imaging research.
  • Countering Disinformation: Supporting initiatives like the 5W project, aimed at combating fake news and promoting accurate information dissemination.
  • European Cyber Resilience: Re-thinking conflict management strategies to enhance resilience in the cyber and information space.
  • Evolution of Telecommunications: Tracing the role of patents and intellectual property rights in the history and future of telecommunication.

These discussions have enhanced our understanding and shaped policy and strategic directions across various sectors.

Internal Sounding Board and Incubator for New Business and Policy Initiatives

The spirit of openness and free exchange is a key differentiator for BBL. Several business initiatives have emerged from BBL; one recent illustrative example is WeltWert®, which Paul, Derk, and Georg founded. Another example is the contribution to EuroStack, a European alternative for digital sovereignty, of which Paul is one of the lead authors and Derk and Georg are contributors. More initiatives, including those from other BBL members, are in the pipeline.
